Introducing Food to Piglets: Why We Start Around 3 Weeks

At BF Farm Kunekune Pigs, we usually begin introducing food to piglets at about 3 weeks of age. At this stage, piglets are still nursing, but they’re also getting curious, nibbling, exploring, and learning that food can come from somewhere besides mom.

This early feed introduction is often called creep feeding. The goal is not to replace the sow’s milk right away. Instead, it helps piglets begin the slow transition toward solid food before weaning.

At our farm, we’ve found that fermented feed is more palatable for young piglets. The softer texture, mild sour smell, and easier-to-nibble consistency seem to encourage them to investigate and taste it sooner.

How We Prepare Fermented Feed

We keep it simple and consistent. We take the feed we buy in bulk from the mill and soak it in 5-gallon pails. Then we cover the pails tightly and let the feed ferment for about 3 days. After that, it’s ready to feed.

This process softens the feed and gives it that slightly sour smell pigs really seem to like. It also starts breaking things down a bit, which may make it easier on their digestive system.

You can do the same thing with any good quality pig feed. No need for anything fancy—just clean containers, fresh water, and a little time.

  • Keep everything clean so you’re getting good fermentation, not spoilage.
  • Make only what you’ll use in a short time so it stays fresh.
  • Offer small amounts and refresh often, especially for young piglets.
  • Introduce feed slowly and let the piglets learn at their own pace.
